Emanuel (Ema-Ema) was born in Techiman hospital. His psychotic and homeless mother disappeared soon after delivery. Ema is deeply autistic. He shows a range of compulsive behavioral stereotypes of which rhythmically clapping his hand is the most obvious one. Being autistic, it took Ema a lot of time to get used to his new environment. In the beginning he was afraid of other children. Nobody was allowed to touch him, nobody could lift him up, sometimes he would hit other children or run away scared. Now gradually Ema 'is coming home' and finding his place in the group. Still he is a loner and very quiet, but he now allows you to hold his hand and sometimes even waits for that to happen. He loves and craves for attention provided it is gentle and loving. He hates being taken by force or by surprise. More and more Ema shows his shy sweet smile. Ema does not talk but he listens very well and understands a lot. He loves music and he can repeat any tune he hears. He loves to walk around with a radio pressed against his ear. Ema likes to walk; when he is taken to town he points at the candies he would like to have. From his room, he stands on the lookout and runs directly to the dining table when supper is ready. If it is not, he runs back as fast as he can and tries again later. |
