Boadu

Boadu is deeply autistic and probably brain-damaged from long episodes of uncontrolled epileptic fits in his early life of which we know near to nothing. He is quiet, anxious and so passive that sometimes we fear he is somewhat depressed. With his recurrent asthma and his eternal running nose he works on motherly instincts and you would take him in your lap were it not that he was so big! He often gets a toy or a teddy bear to keep him company and prevent him from falling asleep. Sleeping seems to be his favorite pastime, especially during the day.
When Boadu is awake he loves going for a walk. He feels safe when he walks hand in hand with another person. Boadu loves holding hands especially those of women. Sometimes he sits for hours holding hands with the autistic Cynthia, which is a moving sight to see. Boadu can dance. If you ask him he will politely oblige but his heart is not in it! When you get to know Boadu a bit better, he will offer you more of his affectionate smiles. He can deeply look into your eyes for a considerable time. Boadu is the only inhabitant of the community who has another inhabitant (Kofi Asare) as a caregiver. Boadu listens very well to him and it is lovely to see that Kofi sometimes takes him on his lap like a baby. Kofi Asare and Boadu live together in a small house next to the dining hut.
